Problem

A military base had hundreds of buildings on a single "meter" with no way to determine power consumption for individual units. Our customer wanted a device that could measure power consumption and report through the existing telephone system to a central office.

Solution

Alpha Omega designed a "clip-on" RMS power monitoring unit that could be installed without modifying existing AC power wiring. The monitor contained a telephone modem that allowed it to call in reports to a central station during early morning hours, using existing telephone wiring. The unit was housed in a rugged two part steel case that could be installed easily on a wall near the power entry for the buildings.

Results

The power monitor installation was very simple, allowing the entire project to be completed in a short time. The daily power useage reports made possible more accurate power demand estimation and made it possible to identify high power consumption units.
